Senior Thesis! Holy cow it's almost time to graduate!!!

I just started week 6 of my Senior Thesis course…time has really flown by! It feels like yesterday I was getting ready for my first class at RMCAD…and using my camera every chance I got to make something for that class. Looking back after all this time, it feels like when I didn’t need to use a camera was a nice break! lol.

I still don’t know what to think about the thesis course…it’s been challenging and rewarding but like a lot of online programs, it goes by so fast! I wish I had more time to work Fins & Feathers, I wish I had more time to edit my Why the Fly, with Bob…just to get these things to a place where I know they should be, or could be…I guess being a perfectionist makes 8 week school terms tough!

I can tell you one thing, I am stoked to walk onto that stage in my new shoes (Jordan 4 Pine Green SBs) and hear my name called out! lol it feels like my entire art career is building up to this moment! My art teachers would be so proud, well I wonder if they would be like “what took you so long???”

In perfect fishing fashion, my amazing wife and kiddo got me a small inflatable fly fishing pontoon boat for graduation! I am so excited to take it out and give it a spin on some of the smaller still waters near home.

Man it feels good to be back on here blogging about whatever I want to talk about! I don’t get this chance much now that I am full time at AvidMax and I miss it…I need to figure out a routine and get back on here regularity, just like Insta and YouTube. I will have a lot more time here soon…and the fishing is getting a lot better now that the temps are warming up! Stay tuned for some boat action!!!

Why the Fly?

In the beginning of HookSet I had an idea for a short video segment called “Why the Fly.” This segment was going to be a recurring interview of fly anglers about their journey into fly fishing…after I started mine, I quickly realized this isn’t a short interview. There’s so much info/love/passion that can go into a session like this that it deserves long form vs a snippet. I started drafting the story portion of my journey into fly fishing and I can’t wait to start filming and eventually share it.

Conservation on the South Platte

Lugging a giant camera lens/camera/monopod down the trail into Waterton Canyon yesterday afternoon, I was approached by a young lady. She asked if I was a photographer and if I could help her. She was working on a school project and needed to get images of conservation in action…or not in action :( What an interesting project, to either be able to provide positive insights or negative ones, and perhaps push for action in a place that needs it.

This really got me thinking about what we every time we go outside to recreate. Are we apart of the conservation story in a positive way…or a negative way?

This immediately took me back to Labor Day weekend and what we saw happen on the South Platte.

We arrived early to fish, this was going to Brandy’s first fly-sighing outing and we were all excited. The river was flowing, but safe to wade…the sky was blue and it was going to be a great day. Fingers crossed, Brandy or Harper would land their first trout on a fly today.

It didn’t take long for people to start showing up to our little honey hole. In fact there was droves of people pulling into the small pull off. Cars kept pulling in, and people seemed to appear out of no where. Walking all over the river banks, setting up tables, canopies and gearing up for Labor Day fun on the South Platte.

At first I wasn’t phased at all by the commotion and amount of people. This is a public place, it’s not my river. I want people to enjoy the resource and appreciate it as we do.

…but then things changed. While changing up my fly rig, I was approached by a man on the bank. He said “when are you leaving?” I have to had looked completely dumbfounded, because he said it again but with some oomph this time. I asked him if they were looking for a place to fish, and he said “NO, we are wanting to picnic.” I told him there are lots of great places to do that, and didn’t matter when we left… He walked off slowly, like he was mad my family and I were in his spot, and should have know better.

Fast forward a little bit, maybe 20 minutes him and his crew of male family members started to hover in the bushes about 20 feet from us. I did’t pay much attention at first but then I realized these people are not going to find a new place to picnic…they wanted this spot and they wanted it pretty badly.

Brandy got a solid snag on the floss worm she was dead drifting and she needed some help getting free, so I waded over and took the rod. I ended up snapping the lower butt section I was pulling so hard. Which made no sense that it would have broken that far down when the tip and middle tip sections are waaaaay more delicate. I digress.

Breaking the rod quickly started a little fire in my gut, and I was getting pissed off…for one this family was hovering like flies on you know what, and I just broke an expensive piece of gear. So we called it and started to pack up.

The flies immediately jumped into the vacant water we climbed out of and started to enjoy the day in the way they had planned. We drove off and we talked about the events and the rod and laughed about it all…

About two weeks go by and Harper and I head over to our little spot, can’t say honey hole now it’s a popular retreat for families wanting to hover I guess.

I start to fish and Harper starts to explore the shoreline for bugs and stones. What she found next really made us sick. Tucked deep in some bushes off the shore, was a ton of trash, a pan, feces, toilet paper, cooking utensils…all picnic type items left behind, thrown in the bushes for the animals to dig through, and someone else to pick up.

Harper and I are going back next week to clean up the river we love and cherish. It’s a resource that has a breaking point, it can’t sustain abuse and neither can the wild animals that live there.

We have a footprint, and no matter what we need to take care of our planet to the best of our ability. Pack it in and pack it out…

Fly Fishing is more to me...

Fly fishing is more than an outdoor activity to me. I have found a ton of peace and happiness being out in the river. Listening to the sounds of the water, birds, and the wind. Bringing my daughter out with me on these adventures has made the whole thing even more special. Her interest in the outdoors, nature, and wild things in wild places motivates me to no end.

Get your kiddos outside and into something fun, it doesn’t have to be fishing…we don’t have forever to show them how amazing our world is and teach them a past time they may enjoy for the rest of their lives.

Shoe Junkie?

I am by no means a shoe junkie or sneaker fan…but one of my best friends sent me this link this am.

Rebranding…sort of

Over the last month I have received a ton of great advice about my site, the logo, my content…and maybe even more importantly, the brand name: Hook Set Photography.

Today I had my Junior Portfolio review at RMCAD. This was a head chair / professor review of my work and where I am at in my education.

The review went great, I was passionate and it resonated in my work and as I spoke about my career goals and plans.

A huge take away from the meeting was Hook Set Photography…they all agreed that my brand is more than still images, and I need to change that.

So now I am Hook Set Studios LLC - all encompassing for studio work, video editing and stills production and what ever I want. We are more than just photos and I am super thankful for all the feedback to push me and this brand.

South Platte Update by me...I went today.

I have always been the kind of person who needs to see it for myself…and damn Tina…that river is popping at the seams and flowing like a mutha!

I did fish…I didn’t catch a fish, I lost 6 flies.

The rain has been amazing, it’s great for all kinds of things and I am not complaining. I just need to learn how to fish this kind of water and learn something new to stay on top of my game as a fly angler.

So what does this all mean, well if you fish the South Platte below Deckers I would give it some more time before you head that way. I read today if you head about Decker and the bridge right there at the cross roads your fishing experience should be solid…but below is going to be a little wild for a bit.

Speaking of wild…well wading in water moving at the CFS is wild and not something I like. I need to look into a wading staff or stick. I’m getting old, old people like them walking sticks!

No get out there and go fish…make some memories and have fun in wild places searching for wild things.

South Platte Update

The rain was non stop for several days, and every section of stream and river in the area is blown out over the banks. The water looks like the ind of coffee I like…dark and creamy. Which is not good for fishing, especially wade fishing where you really want to see where you are stepping.

Flies & Lies in Deckers…who never posts much of anything, loaded a video up on their FaceBook about the river and the conditions. It looks pretty much unfishable at the moment. They stated that the river was a lot better the closer you get to Cheesman Dam…I have a video on Cheeseman Canyon over on Youtube if you’re interested :)

I have been itching to get out and see the river, and certainly fish. With this new video for RMCAD due this week I need to get over there and get some new footage. Stay tuned for that one coming here by the end of the week.

Who is Hook Set Photo (HSP)

This week for RMCAD we are tasked with building a video about our brand. I feel like I pretty did this on my YouTube intro video, but I didn’t include any b-roll footage about camera gear and or editing…I think that side of who are, is just as important as the fishing…without the video side of it, it’s just Hook Set and no photography. hmmm lots to think about.

The timing is perfect for a new video though. Today, fingers crossed a new member of the team arrives…a shiny new FujiFilm X-H2S with all its video and photo glory possibilities. Not that my Nikon Z-30 is subpar for video, it’s just a lot less power packed for creating certain kinds of footage. A solid example here is the slow motion footage the HS2 can create at 120 frames per second at 4K which will be amazing for a lot of things.

Enter Youtube

Videos…videos…videos! YouTube has everything, tutorials to fashion and certainly a ton of fly fishing.

The move to create YouTube account was easy…the hard part was relearning Adobe Premiere Pro and building up content. I think the amount of views I get here is so much bigger than that of Instagram. The Shorts seem to be a lot more popular here and the amount of views can be insane at times.

I have been going nuts creating shorts for YouTube to try and really get out there what I can do and just how interested I am in creating this content.

Here is the last video I made for the channel…I can’t seem to share a short in the blog, so here is a video that I made for RMCAD about Cheeseman Canyon fly fishing.

Instagram

The most logical progression to get photography related content out feels like Instagram. Tons of professionals, businesses, and nerds like me with a camera post their images there…hopefully your content creates engagement and you pick up some level of clientele from it.

Well reach and engagement are not the same thing…I would post a photograph or even make a video reel and I would get some views and some likes but nothing major. I really don’t know if Instagram is the social media platform for my content and the reach I’m searching for.

Why Hook Set?

As a full time photography student, I needed a way to get out more on the river…a way to photograph and video more content of fly fishing. It only seemed like a smart move to combine my passion for photography and fly fishing into one.

During my Cinematography course at RMCAD I filmed a short cinematic poem that changed my trajectory completely. Here is the link to that video…I hope that you love it as much as I do.

Where this all started

In May of 2022, my best friend Bob and I did not draw elk tags in the Colorado big game hunting lottery. I chose to be sad, but Bob chose to turn this defeat into something bigger…a new passion, a new adventure in the outdoors pursuing wild things in wild places, but this time with a fly rod.

I told Bob he was a fool, and only old men who didn’t really want to catch fish took up fly fishing…those old men just didn’t want to be home stuck with “honey-dos.”

Well, fast forward to the summer and I was itching to get outside and do something more than just hiking and camping. Bob asked me to come with him and his son to the South Platte, and give fly fishing a chance.

I’ve been hooked ever since…pun intended. Fly fishing is more than something I just do now, it’s truly a passion of mine and the only thing I hate is that it took me this long to get into it!
